First Translator of Quran into Albanian Commemorated
Organized by the Muslim Scholars Council of Kosovo, the event also included a forum on the works of Sheikh Blakcori (1894–1968), who was orginially from a city in southwest of Kosovo.
A number of his grandchildren were also present at the ceremony, according to Muslimoon Haul Alam website.
The speakers underlined the significance of Sheikh Blakcori’s works and the need to preserve his legacy.
They said his scholarly and education role in an era that was among the most difficult for the Albanian people should be introduced to the new generations.
Grand Mufti of Kosovo Sheikh Naim Ternava said at the event that he personally plans to preserve Sheikh Blakcori’s works.
He appreciated the Muslim Scholars Council for publishing some of his works.
Sheikh Muharrem Blakcori is known as the first person who has translated some Surahs (chapters) of the Holy Quran into the Albanian language.
He also played a major role in compiling the book Ilm al-Haal, the main religious book in Albanian published in the 20th century.

Sheikh Blakcori, who was fluent in Arabic, Turkish and Persian, in addition to his mother tongue, also wrote the first Arabic to Albanian dictionary.
Albanian is an Indo-European language and the only surviving representative of the Albanoid branch, which belongs to the Paleo-Balkan group. Standard Albanian is the official language of Albania and Kosovo, and a co-official language in North Macedonia and Montenegro, as well as a recognized minority language of Italy, Croatia, Romania and Serbia.
